Lesson Plan

DURATION of the LESSON   : 80 minutes.  

OBJECTIVES of the LESSON:

1. Students will recognize a map that approximates their community and will create a facsimile of such a map.
2. Using short phrases, students will present the large, butcher paper maps to their classmates.
3. Using phrases or short sentences, students will be able to respond orally to a series of questions about a fictitious town or city.
4. Students will be able to relate to “what makes a good community?” by watching videos.
5. Students will be able to fill in the blanks in worksheet by listening community song.



Warm up (25):
Teacher displays a variety of large geographic maps all around the classroom and encourages students to walk around, in a "gallery walk" to look at these maps. These maps depict cities, states, provinces and countries.
Teacher walks around the room and describes various features of the displayed maps, such as location of public buildings, neighbourhoods, cities, states or provinces and of geographical features, such as rivers and mountains. As Teacher talks, he/she writes names of important vocabulary both in the target language (TL) and the native language of the students (L1) on the front board or on an overhead transparency. Teacher includes the map directions: north, south, east, and west.
EXAMPLES: park, school, store, movie theatre, church, post office, hotel, train station, swimming pool, campground, forest, river, beach, city, country, gulf, sea, ocean, island, peninsula…
Teacher shows a video about “What makes a good community?” and then teacher asks them some questions about the video.
 Throughout this input time, Teacher assures student comprehension and participation by asking yes/no, either/or, and what/where questions about the information.
Teacher divides the students into 3 groups. Teacher assigns each group to create a large map of a neighbourhood, a city, or a country. Teacher provides each group with coloured markers and a large piece of butcher paper. Teacher encourages creativity by having music playing in the background as students work.

Main activity (35):
Teacher presents a slide show about a community. (The text of the PowerPoint provided with the unit is in English, but Teacher may change text to the target language as appropriate.)
Teacher encourages student involvement and participation by asking students to create a story about the exchange student's home town or city. Each new fact and event of the story is reinforced with yes/no, either/or, who/what/where questions. Teacher encourages students to respond as a class, as well as individual students.
Teacher divides the class into two teams. The teams stand in a line on opposite sides of the classroom. The first student in line is in the back of the room and not near the front. This student holds a dry erase pen or a piece of chalk. Teacher informs that the students with the writing tool must run to the front board and write down their answer to Teacher's question as fast as possible. The first student to write a correct response (both of information and of language context) will win a point for his/her team. Those students then run back to their line and pass the writing tool to the next student. This process continues until Teacher calls "time."
The team with the most points at the end of this game will win extra-credit points for participation for today.
Teacher asks the following types of questions:
·         Which day is the first day of the week?
·         What can we see in a garden?
·         What does your family recycle?
·         Where is Armenia?
·         Why are trees good for the earth?
·         What do you like to buy in a supermarket?
·         Do you like freeways or expressways? Why or why not?
·         Which is better for the earth, riding on the bus or in the car?
·         Which is better, a gas-powered car or an electric car?
·         Where do you want to go to college?
·         What do you do when you go to a park?
·         Do you like to go skate-boarding?
·         When was the last time you and your family went to the beach?
·         What do you like to do at the beach?
·         What do you and your family do to keep our earth beautiful?

 Teacher makes students listen to a song. Song is about community. Firstly students just listen to the song. Then teacher gives them fill in the blanks worksheet about song’s lyrics. Secondly students listen to the song and fill in the blanks. Finally students listen to the song last time. Then teacher shows them answers.

Follow up (10):
Students, in pairs, tell each other which slide in the PowerPoint presentation they liked the best and why.

Lesson Plan (Pollution)

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: Realia, pictures, smart board, white board, board marker, cartoons, computer, and worksheets.

OBJECTIVES:
1.      By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize some vocabulary items such as “air pollution, water pollution, land pollution, noise pollution” related to the topic through pictures and contextualization.

2.      By the end of the lesson, students will be able to recognize some vocabulary items such as “insect killer, exhaust fumes, sewage waste, petroleum, deforestation, rubbish, megaphone, and hooter” and list them under the correct category through a matching activity. 

3.      By the end of the lesson, students will be able to arrive at a conclusion that which types of pollution they often observe in their city through a classroom survey.

4.      By the end of the lesson, students will be able to practice the structure “should/should not” to express their opinions by discussing and finding some solutions about the specific type of pollution defined according to the results of the classroom survey.

5.      By the end of the lesson, students will be able to create a poster which includes a slogan according to the specific pollution type that they have engaged in the while activity.

6.      By the end of the lesson, students will be able to present their posters and vote their works.



PRESENTATION

Warm up

Teacher enters into the classroom and greets the students. Then, teacher throws a plastic bottle, paper, and a piece of orange peel on the ground. Teacher then asks students what he or she is doing. Teacher asks if he or she is getting the class (environment) clean or dirty. Teacher explains that it means “pollution” and writes it down on the board.    
Pre-Stage
After teacher introduces the topic through realia, he or she presents target vocabulary items by contextualizing and using some pictures as well. Teacher gives students a matching activity to consolidate the introduction of the target vocabulary items. Students here work individually.

While-Stage
Activity
Teacher explains students that they are going to complete a survey about the types of pollution they observe in their city. Students here work individually. When the students finish, the teacher asks them who gives 4 points to types of pollution, respectively. Teacher writes their scores down on the board and counts them. After then, the highest scored pollution is defined as the most common type of pollution in their city. Next, teacher asks what they should or should not do to stop this pollution. The students then discuss with their partners and find possible solutions about that pollution type. In the end, they share their opinions.

Post-Stage
Activity
Teacher divides students into 6 groups of 5. Then, teacher asks students to prepare a poster which includes a slogan about the specific pollution which is defined in the while stage. Then, students present and vote their works.




Contingency Plan
If the plan does not work well, students work on writing a petition to the municipality about the defined pollution in the while stage’s activity.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS:
1.  At the end of the lesson students will be able to use new words in meaningful sentences. (Flood, tsunami, earthquake, tornado, etc.)
2. At the end of the lesson students will be able to manipulate to WH questions.
3. At the end of the lesson students will be able to apply Simple Past tense by using the verbs practiced in the lesson. (I.e. happened, killed, was/were, caused, etc.)


   Warm-up:  (15 min)
Teacher starts the lesson with showing the pictures related to the natural disasters. Then,   
teacher asks questions:
 -Do you know where earthquake, flood, tsunami, etc happened mostly?
 -Have you ever experienced one of these natural disasters? 
 -Can you remember any kind of disasters that happened up to now?
 -When did it happen?
 -Where did it happen?
 -How many people were killed because of natural disasters?





 

While-activity:   (15 min)

     In while activity, students will listen the dialogue related to the natural disasters. Before, they start to listen, teacher gives activity paper for each students. In the first listening, students will just listen and write under the pictures where these natural disasters happen mostly. Then, while they are listening second time, teacher asks them to fill in the blanks with the right words. After, they check fill in the blanks activity all together. Then, there is concept check questions related with the listening part. Teacher and students will do it all together.
     Then, the teacher has a video related with the topic and they all just watch it. After, teacher asks questions related to the video.
 -Where did it happen?    
 -When did it happen?
 -What caused the disaster?
 -How many people were killed because of disaster?
      
    These questions are taken from the course book. Teacher and students answer the question all together. Teacher writes the answers on the board.  Then, teacher creates group of four people and asks to students to find one natural disaster that happened before and asks students to answer these question. The teacher allows using phones to find information related with the questions. They also have a chance to use as an example answers on the board.

-It happened in Japan
-It happened at 14:46 on Friday 11 March 2011.
-Earthquake was caused to the thousands of people’s death. At the same time, earthquake was caused to the big tsunami.
-15.828 people were killed because of earthquake and tsunami.




     Post-activity:   (10 min)

    After, every group write a natural disaster, teacher and students talk about it and discuss which one is most worst one. Finally, there is an crossword, students will work in pairs and try to find the right words.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS:
1.  At the end of the lesson students will be able to list the best place for holiday.
2. At the end of the lesson students will be able to plan the holiday trip
3. At the end of the lesson students will be able to use Present Continuous tense by using the verbs practiced in the lesson. (I.e. We are going to/are arriving/are observing/are eating/etc.)


   Warm-up:   (15 min)
Teacher starts the lesson with showing the pictures related to the big cities in the world. Then,   
teacher asks questions:
 - Have you ever been abroad? 
 - Do you have a dream city?
 - What is the most popular thing in your dream city?
 - Have you ever think about the visiting places in your dream city?
 - Which places do you want to visit firstly in your dream city?
 - Which language are they talking?
 - Do they have a special meal?
    In addition there are abbreviations before the reading part. Teacher just gives two minutes to find those abbreviations. They will work in pair and they can use their phones to find it. Then, teacher asks a question related to using abbreviations. Do you think is using abbreviations good for us? If it is good or bad, why do you think so?



 

While-activity:   (15 min)

     In while activity, students will read the paragraph from the book. Firstly, students will read the paragraph individually. Then, teacher asks what is the main idea of the paragraph. After, teacher chooses one volunteer to read the paragraph. And when student finish, there are some question related to the paragraph:
1.    Who is Ricardo going to holiday with?
2.    Which means of transport are they going to use?
3.    How many days is the journey going to take?
4.    What are they going to do in Ushuaia?
5.    Where are they going to see the floating icebergs
6.    How many days are they going to stay in Buenos Aires?
The reading part is Ricardo’s letter and his plan about what he is doing on holiday. After answering these questions, teacher asks some questions:
-      Where is the best/fantastic place for holiday?
-      Why/why not?
-      What kind of activities are you interested in doing while you are on holiday?
Then, teacher divides the class in group of four people, and wants from the each group to write a planning letter. Firstly, each group should choose one city from Turkey for holiday trip. And think that they will stay there for four days. Then, they will plan what they will do each day and where they will visit and what they will eat each day. Of course they will use their phones to Google it.


     Post-activity:  (10 min)

    In post activity, they will listen to every group and discuss which group’s holiday plan is most interesting.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS
1-      Make them to realize vocabulary that they are familiar with.( football, volleyball, basketball, tennis)
2-      Associate vocabularies with the meanings with the help of visual materials.
Preparation: I am going to organize activity according to students’ language level, interests, age level and background. I am going to prepare pictures which each shows a sport. And I am going to prepare a cartoon. I am going to write sport names on the cartoon. I am going to leave place for pictures.
INTRODUCTION:
For each of sport name I am going to say a sport name with correct pronunciation by showing related pictures. After they hear, I am going to want them to repeat the pronunciation. I am going to want them to say  the meanings. Already they are familiar with names of sports that are similar to their native language. If they are meet new vocabulary, I am going to explain it. For example, probably they don’t know rollerblading. I am going to introduce them the meaning by showing picture of children who is rollerblading. For each picture I am going to introduce students with sports. 10 minute is going to take probably. I am going to speak about my own favourite sport. I am also speak about sport that I dislike. I am going to want them to make group in four and give 10 minute to study. Each member of group is going to speak about his/her favourite sport and sport that she/he dislike. Other member of the same group is going to take notes about speaker’s likes and dislikes. In this format each group is going to take notes and write their names next to the sentences. I am going to collect notes and ask questions about each group about their group friend’s likes and dislikes. I am going to ask questions such as ‘’ Does hakan like football? , Does yeşim dislike basketball?’’ group work is going to last 20 minute.

PRODUCTION :
I am sure they are going to be interested with the subject. After they capture the meanings of sports, I am going to want them to get permission for starting to talk. I am going to show them a picture and one of the volunteer is going to answer and take and stick it on the correct place. Volunteer student is going to stick it over the written name of sport. After student stick one picture, he/she is going to repeat the pronunciation of the vocabulary in front of the class. Each volunteer student is going to stick one picture whatever she/he want. The aim for repeating pronunciation in front of the class is encourage them to speak and improve their practice of pronunciation. After each student do the job, I am going to ask them their favourite sport. This part is going to last 35 minute. Because while deciding whose must come and stick take much time.
At the end of lesson, I am going to give them balloons. They are going to blow balloons. They are going to write one sentence about their favourite sport and one sentence about their friend’s favourite sport. They are going to write sport names which they remember from the lesson. End of lesson is going to last 15 minute.

OBJECTIVES/GOALS: Students will be able to;
1. express their feelings about games and hobbies by using likes and dislikes structure
2. identify the names of the games and hobbies
3. to practise talking about hobbies and games
INTRODUCTION: (How will you introduce the teaching skill/concept?) 
 




I am going to use visual materials to introduce the names of the hobbies and games. Our essential material is projector. I am going to project the pictures onto the screen. As soon as I show each picture one by one I am going to repeat the names of games. I am going to want them repeat the vocabulary with correct pronunciation. It is going to take 10 minute.

PRESENTATION:
 I am going to create a context by showing pictures of the games and hobbies. I am going to want them to watch and listen me carefully. I am going to show one picture. I am going to enable the game to be enlivened. For example, for the game hopscotch I am going to draw a set of joined squares on the ground. I am going to throw one stone onto the square. I am going want them to guess the game in their native language. I am going to say the game name in the target language. And other example, I am going to want a volunteer. I am going to tie over the eyes of the volunteer student. And I am going to want him/her to try to catch me. I am going to answer my question after we enliven the game. I am going to ask ‘which game do we play now?’ I am going to say the word in the target language. I am going to want them to listen me carefully. They are going to say the names of games in target language while performing. I am going to want students to say games that they like. I am going to mention about hobbies that familiar to them. Puzzle, chess, computer games are already familiar to them. I am going to speak about my hobby. I am going to show my pictures while I am enjoying with my hobby. I am going to ask some questions about the pictures. Questions are going to be like that;" What do you do in your leisure time?  Which hobbies, games do you like?’’ etc. I am going to give new vocabulary and write them on the board. Presentation part is going to take 30-40 minute.

PRACTICE: Students are going to work in pairs and tell their likes and dislikes about the games
 Students are going to write their favourite games and hobbies on a flashcard. This section is going to take 10 minute.

PRODUCTION: Each student is going to prepare a flashcard. Each student is going to write his/her favourite game and draw a picture next to the writing. After everybody write the favourite games or hobbies, we are going to play memory game. Playing this memory game is going to help students using the funny flashcards to develop memorization and efficiency. Also I aimed to make them express their feelings. At the end of lesson, I am going to give vocabularies by letting students go out and discover the games. Final stage is going to take 20 minute.
