Lesson Plan 1

Context: Vegetables
Grade: 12
Proficiency Level: B1
Duration: 40’
Objective(s): At the end of the lesson students will be able to;
  • have an idea about how to live healthy,
  • form sentences by using if clauses,
  • recognize the names of the vegetables,
  • create a blog post about the topic,
by practising with the authentic materials.
Materials:
  • spinach
  • speakers
  • green vegetables
Steps:
Warm up (5’): The teacher enters the class and then tries to lift the chair but s/he couldn’t lift it intentionally. After that, s/he eats a piece of spinach and then s/he plays the music of Popeye’s, and lifts the chair. Then the teacher says: “I ate a healthy food then I became stronger.”
Introduction (5’): The teacher tells the class they are going learn how they can keep healthy.
Presentation (30’): The teacher shows 10 vegetables that s/he brought (spinach, leek, cauliflower, cabbage, celery, zucchini, parsley, artichoke, watercress.) When s/he shows the vegetables, s/he tells their names by focusing on the pronunciation and their benefits on health by forming sentences. For example, “If you eat spinach, it will increase endurance of your body. If you consume artichoke, it can help you to digest food easily. If you consume celery well enough, it will be helpful for high blood pressure.”
Activity 1 (10’): The teacher asks students to write the names of the vegetables under the pictures and match them with their benefits on health. The teacher distributes the worksheet, and after they have finished, they will answer them all together.
Spinach, it will increase endurance of your body. Artichoke, it can help you to digest food easily. Celery, it will be helpful for high blood pressure.
Activity 2 (25’): The teacher tells the students to work in pairs, and they will create a blog page on health. They will give tips about being healthy and eating healthy foods to their followers. If they want, they can post them on their blog pages also.



Review (5’): The teacher shows the vegetables s/he brought, and they repeat the names of them.

OBJECTIVES of the LESSON:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able:

·         To explain the If clauses-Type 2
·         To practice the Type 2 in spoken language
·         To match the sentences in Type 2
·         To practice If Clauses with the game
·         To use the If clauses-Type 2



PRE-ACTIVITY
Students learned the topic before that lesson. Teacher will give examples for remembering of students from my own life. For example ‘ I live in Ankara. If I lived by the sea, I would go swimming a lot.’


ACTIVITIES
Teacher will show questions on smart-board according to Type 2. Example; ‘ If you only had 24 hours to live, what would you do?’ .Students that be volunteer will answer to questions. Without volunteers from students, teacher can give examples or teacher can answer to question according to own idea before students answer.
After speaking about questions and answers, teacher will give sentences that I cut to students. There are sentences of type zero, type 1 and type 2. Students will work in pairs. Students will combine to the beginning of sentence with the end of sentence. After completing sentences, students will read the sentences. Teacher will adjust wrong combining sentences.

CONTINGENCY PLAN
My activity is the last activity of the first lesson. Matching sentences is not a long activity. I may not have enough time because of the last activity. If I had no enough time, I could do to speaking part in a shorter time.

       GAME
Teacher prepares instructive game for students. Students play a game. The game is a board game. Teacher makes groups 5 people in the class. Teacher gives a number to each group. Teacher sticks the board game to board, and teacher opens the game in the smart board. Teacher prepare a dice that be numbers of ‘1,2,3,-1,-2,-3’. Also, each colorful of sentences has different point. A student from a group comes to board by turns. S/he throws the dice. Finally, according to total point, teacher determines winner group. Teacher gives the small gifts to winner students. For example; highlighter pencil.
