LESSON PLAN
Lesson title: Media
Topic: Media
Age of students: 15-16
Student profile: Pre-intermediate
Skills to be emphasized: Speaking and writing are emphasized, plus reading
and listening are integrated to speaking and writing skills.
Language: Present Simple tense is
dominant, but Simple Past Tense also is used. (The teacher doesn’t explain
tenses since students already know Simple past Tense and Present Simple tense)
Vocabulary:

Media: Television, Newspapers and Magazines, Internet, Movies, Radio

Verbs: watch, read, listen, surf, buy, like etc.)
·
Words: comedy, horror, romantic, adventure, action, science fiction,
fantasy
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Write at
least three advantages of media.

Write at
least three disadvantages of media.

Recall the
dates of invention of media(newspapers, TV, Internet, Movies, Radio)
·
Match types
of movies with posters of movies(comedy, adventure, action, romantic, horror,
science fiction)
·
Draw a
diagram about usage Forms of Media Rates in their class in 2014.
Materials: Pictures of Media (TV, newspapers, computer, posters of movies,
radio), the book, video about Media, worksheets (matching types of movies with
posters of movies)
Warm-up(10 minutes):
First step: The teacher comes
to class and greets students, shows the newspapers to the students, I read a
new about an accident therefore I am not good.
Second step: The Teacher asks students “Do you
read newspapers or do you watch news?” students answers the question. The
teacher continues with new questions “what is TV used for? Or what is newspaper
used for? The teacher gives examples like “-To give the news, to advertise
things, to share opinions, to give gossip about
celebrities, to show comic strips, to share crossword puzzles”. The teacher
asks the same questions about radio, movies( what kind of movies do you watch?)
and internet.
Third step: The teacher gives worksheet about
types of movies and says you have two minutes to do it. The students read the
answers, the teacher corrects if there is mistake.
while-(20 minutes)
First step: The teacher says “Look at the page 38
and match the dates to the media. You can talk to your partner and you have two
minutes”
Second step: The teacher asks “Which one of them
is most important according to you? why?” and gives example: I think, the
internet is most significant since we can find immediately whatever and
whenever we want.
Third step: The teacher says “Look at the
activity “B” read the dialogues and match them to the pictures. Talk to your
partner and you have five minutes”. The students read answers and the teachers
corrects if there is any mistake.
Fourth step: The teacher says “Look at the
activity “C” you will complete this part at home, but my question is; which
form of media have been used so much in Turkey in 2011? The students will
answer(TV), the teacher says let’s watch a video about TV.
Post-(10 minutes)
First step: Students watch video and the teacher wants they be
group of five people. There will be five groups in the class, and each group
will write three advantages and three disadvantages of a form of media.(newspaper, radio, TV,
internet, movies, book) They will have seven minutes to write. The teacher
wants each group read an advantage and a disadvantage loudly in the class after
they finished. The teacher makes a short review and finishes class. ( see you
next week)
Contingency
Plan-
If the teacher has extra time, s/he shows the
pictures of famous actors one by one (Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kenan
İmirzalıoğlu) and asks “Do you know him? Which films of Brad Pitt did you
watch? What kind of film is it?” If you had your own TV channel what would you
show on it? If you had your own radio station what kind of music would you
play? If you hosted your own podcast what would you talk about? If you had your
own website what would be on it?

Language: Grammar: “Should and ought to”
Vocabulary:

Healthy Life: cut back, heart
attack, abandon, take up, strengthen, cardiovascular system
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

Recall “should
and ought to” structure by giving advices to their unhealthy friend
•
Recognize
unknown vocabularies (cut back, heart attack,
abandon, take up, strengthen, cardiovascular system) by doing filling the blanks activity
•
Recall the
words and structure by listening the text
•
Write at least four sentences by using “should and ought to”
structure.
Materials: Worksheet about the dialogue, pictures about healthy life, listening
track, dialogue.
Warm-up(10 minutes):
The teacher comes to class and greets the
students. S/he shows the pictures about healthy life one by one and asks questions
about pictures (what do you see? What is about?). The teacher writes the topic
on the board and asks the students say what should they do in order to have a
healthy life.
while-(20 minutes)
The teacher says that they will listen to a
dialogue try to understand what is about? What is happening in the dialogue?
The teacher gives worksheets to the students and want they listen to the track in
order to fill in the blanks and answer the questions about the dialogue in the
second listening. The teacher explains unknown words after the students answer
the questions.
Post-(10 minutes)
The teacher wants
the students be groups of four students and each group writes five advices to
their unhealthy friend. They will have ten minutes to do it. Each group talker
will read an advice loudly in the class. I will choose the group talker. The
teacher checks their mistakes while they are writing in the group. The teacher
reviews the whole topic at the end of the class and finishes the class. (see

Woman: Anything else?
Man:Nope, that's all for now. Hey, hon, you know,
they're organizing a company basketball team, and I'm thinking about joining.

Woman: Humph
Man: "Humph" What do you mean
"Humph." I was the star player in high school.
Woman: Yeah, twenty-five years ago. Look, I just
don't want you having a heart attack running up and down the court.
Man:So, what are you suggesting? Should I just
abandon the idea? I'm not that out of shape.
Woman: Well . . . you ought to at least have a
physical before you begin. I mean, it HAS been at least five years since you
played at all.
Man:Well, okay, but . . .
Woman: And you need to watch your diet and cut
back on the fatty foods, like ice cream. And you should try eating more fresh
fruits and vegetables.
Man: Yeah, you're probably right.
Woman: And you should take up a little weight
training to strengthen your muscles or perhaps try cycling to build up your
cardiovascular system. Oh, and you need to go to bed early instead of watching
TV half the night.
Man: Hey, you're starting to sound like my
personal fitness instructor!
Woman: No, I just love you, and I want you to be
around for a long, long time.
